In Baldur’s Gate 3’s Lower City Sewers in Underdark, you’ll encounter Dairow Vin, an unconscious Tiefling surrounded by empty Potion of Sleep bottles. Once living in Elturel, Dairow and his husband sought a better life but were separated. Dairow ended up connected to the criminal Guild while his partner met refugees and travelled with them. When the Absolute forces attacked, his husband disappeared and was assumed dead.
Dairow worked with Nine Fingers Keene to track down the refugees. Once he confirmed his husband’s death, Dairow drank a lot of Potions of Sleep in grief (so many empty bottles tell how much he drank), falling into an Impenetrable Slumber state in the sewers. If you use Speak with Dead or read his notes, you’ll learn that his husband was likely the Garrett brother, a refugee found dead by the cliffside in Rivington. If you took pity on this poor guy and want to wake up Dairow Vin in BG3, here’s everything you need to know.
Note: Although the game says it is impossible to wake Dairow, there’s a way to bypass it and interact with him.
Where to Find Dairow
Head into the Lower City Sewers in Act 3 inside Undercity Ruins, northwest of the City Sewers waypoint, at around X: -155, Y: 846. If you’ve already unlocked Flymm’s Cargo, you can also reach him from the warehouse basement. He is slumped over next to a small pile of empty potion bottles, hard to miss once you’re in the right tunnel. Examine him, and he will appear as a level 1 Mephistopheles Tiefling with around 5 HP, flagged hostile.
How to Wake Up Dairow Vin in BG3
Dairow’s condition, Impenetrable Slumber, is incurable with no proper treatment. Since he cannot be woken normally, you have to exploit a loophole involving death. Death Ward is a level 4 spell that stops one killing blow and revives the target at 1 HP instead of letting them die, which sidesteps the “incurable” part. But Death Ward only targets allies, and Dairow is hostile, so he does not qualify as an ally for the spell.
First, use the Dominate Person spell to turn him friendly (a Scroll of Dominate Person works fine if none of your party knows the spell).

Once he is under your control, have a Cleric (Shadowheart recommended) cast Death Ward on him. Now you need to kill him; attack Dairow until his HP reduces to zero. This would usually finish him off, but due to Death Ward, he will respawn with 1 HP with his “Unconscious” status removed, and this time, Dairow Vin is somehow awake in Baldur’s Gate 3.
What Happens After You Wake Him?

Dairow will remain unfriendly and won’t talk to you. The best you’ll get out of him is a single fixed NPC generic line, something along the lines of sounding impressed; then he either runs off or stays put in turn-based mode.
The leading theory is that he was meant to be part of a refugee or Thieves’ Guild story abandoned before the game’s launch, one of a few loose threads like it in Act 3, and the wake-up interaction is likely just unfinished code. If you want a sleeping character in this same “solve it and get something” category, visit Last Light Inn in Act 2 and wake up Art Cullagh to get some payoff.
